The Other Sister is a creative studio based in Calgary, Canada run by Illustrator and Graphic Designer, Ashley Bodemer.

The name comes from an inside joke between her and her (very real) sister.

Ashley’s illustration work is a playful exploration of Canadian and Calgarian identity, featuring local landmarks, native wildlife, cultural references, and community life. Rooted in her professional background as a landscape and urban designer, her practice centres on the relationship between people and public space. Ashley’s art represents an evolution of her urban design foundation into her distinct visual voice, bringing a unique placemaking perspective to the pieces she illustrates.

Ashley works to communicate the importance of community, and the benefits of public space, in simplified and engaging ways all people can understand. Her use of bright colours makes her work approachable and energetic and she strives to reach and resonate with audiences of all ages. Her work is typically digital as she loves the ability to layer and adjust the composition of her pieces regularly, although she does dabble in analog mediums from time to time.
